Holocaust survivor shares story

MOUNT PLEASANT — Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz lived through hell and back and she wants everyone to remember that.

Now a Charlotte-based author and professor emerita in German literature at UNC-Charlotte, Cernyak-Spatz lived through two torturous years in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp.

“My most unforgettable memory was Christmas 1943,” she recalled. “I had a job in an administrative office and we were given a small party.”

“Though an orchestra was playing Christmas carols, there was no way it could drown out the screams and cursing of the women in the gas chamber building behind us.”
